Ahem. Picked up a secondhand copy of a Cybotron CD that I didn't know existed until last night: 'Interface: The Roots of Techno.' It's got all the classics - "Clear," "Techno City," "Cosmic Cars," "Alleys of Your Mind, "R-9" - why it's so obscure is beyond me, especially since it was released last year. (UK CD: Southbound CDSEWD 069) Also picked up Goldie - 'Timeless' earlier this week (thanks to all who recommended Virgin). The title track is an early runaway favorite to get my vote for track of the year. It's a twenty-minute multipart piece with recurring themes, gorgeous sounds and a transition from the intro to the first movement (or whatever) that's unfrickinbelievable. The rest of the album ranges from very good to excellent, but wow, what a track. Jill says 'Exit Planet Dust' is her favorite album of the year so far, and I can't say I disagree strongly. It's a big, happy, FUN album with tons of energy that's still well-suited for home listening. Now if we can only convince Astralwerks to compile a CD of tracks from their 12"-only EP's and their remix work, we'll be cookin' with gas. :) I like all the tracks on "Donkey Rhubarb," too, although from the reviews I'd read I expected more of a prominent calypso feel to DR. *Who* is/are Goldie? I've seen several reviews of this over the last few weeks now, but none have given any clues about the artist. A 20-min piece with "movements" sure doesn't sound like most of the stuff that gets reviewed here -- what's it comparable to? Thanks in advance for any info, and thanks as well to those who posted about Derrick May. It's a shame none of his own albums (as opposed to comps) is in print here.... He's basically the intellijungle man of the hour, so you might make comparisons to A Guy Called Gerald, 4 Hero, and the like - not exactly typical IDM fodder, but we've had a few threads about this sort of stuff lately, and as you might surmise, this stuff does aim towards being more than dancefloor music.

Well, all his Transmat 12"s are still in print, to the best of my knowledge. He never did release any LP's, though. C. -- cspot@hyperreal.com (Chris.Hilker) "I feel like I'm being electrocuted."

Hi, Goldie is probably the biggest and best-known British drum 'n' bass (intelligent/ambient/experimental jungle) producer right now. 'Timeless' entered the national album charts here at number 6 last week, and he's signed a very expensive deal with FFRR. He's a thirtysomething black ex-breakdancer/graffiti artis/raver who owns the Metalheadz label, the premier underground intelligent jungle label in the UK. I agree about the review of 'Timeless' it is absolutely superb. For stuff in a similar vein check A Guy Called Gerald, 4 Hero, Roni Size and DJ Krust, LTJ Bukem, Omni Trio, Aquarius, PFM, Spring Heel Jack, Photek, Jay Majik, Dillinja, Doc Scott, DJ Crystl, Lemon D, Global Communications' 'Chameleon' alias to name but a few. There are vast quantities of absolutely superb records by these people coming out of the British underground at a hell of a rate. This is the future...
