Well, in spite of the recent spate of "I hate compilations"/"I love compilations" messages on the idm list, I need to check in with a thumbs-up on _The Trip Hop Test_, on Moonshine here in the States. Yes, the packaging has a certain dairy quality to it (read: cheesy), but the mix of trippy tracks are really quite good, and for a domestic price, at least introduces those of us outside of San Fran to some quality music. Tops: The totally trippy Saint Etienne track, "Filthy", the Dust Brothers' "My Mercury Mouth", the Portishead remix of Paul Weller's "Wildwood", and the absolutely fantastic "Transmit Liberation" by Single Cell Orchestra. Yes, much of the material has been seen before (I'm getting very, very tired of "They Came in Peace" by Tranquility Bass, for example), but as an introduction to a new type of groove, this does the trick. I'd give it a 7, maybe an 8. Pay no more than $12, and search out the full-length releases by your favorite artist(s). Ditto on "Transmit Liberation" -- yummy. Strangely, I've got another version of it on tape (from an ATOI show here in Seattle) that I like better... at least I think it's another mix; generally smoother-sounding, and longer (slithers along for quite a while after the beat drops out.) Is that just me, or is this other mix available somewhere? --Eric "Eeeoo ded hwauopsy mectoph, mectagin dupwoxin, moi phoi wops eppepepekin gitto phepsy demego doi aga din a doich demoi aga donc heedey obectdee _ (~~\(Eric Moon)/~\_/~~~~\__/~\(kludge@u.washington.edu) doohuena."/~~\/ ) \__)---------(_______________)----------------------------------(_____/

I myself was disappointed with this comp; but that's because I was looking forward to something harder (tough luck on a domestic comp, I suppose) -- somewhere along the lines of Omar Santana (dark side of the shroom ep), full of hardcore hip-hop percussions/samples, some tougher efx/acid lines (I liked how he reworked the efx from Prodigy's `Poison'), or Chemical Brothers (Dust Brothers = Chem Bros on lightcore?), etc... I only bothered to really listen to the Tranquility Bass track (yeah, where was I?) I'd give it a 5/10. Anybody have some recent tr*p-h*p / electro reviews? Some of my recent purchases: Aneosis `Blood & Sweat in London' Magnetic North's `Elements of Phunkee Noize Sampler' (or something like), X-911 `Les Champs Magnetique' -- Ask me if you'd like a review of any of these. -Paul

actually, Dark Side Of The Shroom just came out on moonshine's second entry in the Trip Hop series... i think the comp is called Total Trip Hop.

What about the Crystal Method's ubiquitous (and overexposed) track (the name of which I refuse to speak out of protest)? Is it in every comp that Moonshine puts out?

...unless you are buying it from an independent retailer who cannot obtain it straight from the label or from their distributor Navarre (the distributor who doesn't like small accounts). They have to pay about $11 wholesale for it. c Cody Junior's Farm Records an interesting selection of music jrsfarm@tyrell.net send your wantlists http://www.tyrell.net/~jrsfarm/ visit our web pages
