Locust's "Skysplit" ... Just buy it. --Seofon (Okay, I know I should say more, but I'm just going to end up saying "Hey, he sounds like the new Aphex Twin and how many times have you all heard THAT before." In this case, though, I think the comparison stands up pretty well. Tweaky bizarre noises, particularly unique percussions, and loads of mind- numbing ambience. "Tamed" is 157 bpm of...just...arrrgh. Horrendous. By the way, the downside of Locust is similar to the downside of Aphex: sometimes it just gets a little too odd and you wonder "What was he thinking?" I am very ashamed of this parentheses. Take it with a grain of salt.)

Is this the same Locust whose cut "Prospero" is on Excursions in Ambience vol. 2? If so, how does it compare, do you think? Thx. stu 8)

Yes indeedy, the very same Locust who is responsible for "Prospero" on Excursions in Ambience 2 (and for the knob-twiddling on much of Seefeel's work) authored _Skysplit_. I would say that if you dig "Prospero" and Aphexy weirdness, then _Skysplit_ will be right down your alley. It has nothing as slow as "Prospero", but all of it is very trancy and individual. Given what I've heard, Locust is a very promising artist indeed. --Seofon

DJKC mentioned a while ago that Locust reminds him of Seefeel's "Plainsong"... This may be because Locust is Seefeel's engineer, at least for their e.p.'s. Mark Clifford of Seefeels also worked with Locust on "Pithano" off Locust's _Skysplit_ e.p.. I really really like Locust's sound: interesting percussions (nice boomy tomed kicks), muted ambient spookiness a la SAW II, occasional insanity. Be sure to check him out, even if only the excellent "Prospero" on Excursions in Ambience II. One little problem, though.... The second track on the A-side of _Skysplit_ is titled "Tamed" and I was thrilled to see that as the title of track 5 of _Weathered_Well_. However, when I listened to the album, the song I actually heard was the first song on the B-side of _Skyplit_. Besides the fact that I am rather disappointed, since the second track on the A-side is my favorite on that record, I also don't know which is the real "Tamed". I doubt anyone can clear up this confusion, but there's always hope.... --Seofon

Just got back from Holland, and picked up, among other things: Locust - "Weathered Well" Massively impressed. Who are they, and why have I not heard of them before? They are English right? Locust is Mark Van Hoen from England who as well as having some previous releases (none of which I've heard about) also engineers for Seefeel. He is currently the R&S fave with them spending lots on advertising etc. with Renaat (R&S head honcho) describing Locust as a cross between Aphex and Klaus Schulz (sp?). Does anyone have any comments about the NATURAL COMPOSITE and THE TRUTH IS BORN OF ARGUMENTS LP's from Locust? I have WEATHERED WELL, and love his stuff, but I only saw the Natural Composite album on CD at my shop. I am getting a copy of The Truth is born of arguments for myself in tommorrow, so I can't comment on that one quite yet. Natural Compsotite is up to par with the others (thumbs up!), he also has another lp called In Rememberence of Times Past on apollo as well which contains his older tracks from as early as 1982, which proves one of three things, A: He has a time machine, B. He is/was way ahead of his time C. He lied about the years they were made. Very dark and deep stuff! I have an extra copy of Locust-Needle for trade (it is limited to 500 copies on Apollo), if anyone wants it send me an e mail and i will send my list of wants. Derek
