I may be out of the loop of the discussion, but yeah "Maxinquaye" is just
incredible. Though I don't consider myself a fuckin' trendie-a bandwagon
hopper maybe-it probably is my best of the year so far (hopefully to topped
by the soon-to-be-released Therapy? LP, but anyway...). The way it begins
still knocks me out, the wispy vocal samples and the Indian percussion on
"Overcome", Wow. But it's the vocalist Martine's lazy voice which really
seems to be crux of the LP's resonance. Just the way she indifferently
rambles through the PE track "Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos" and
effortlessly uses that same voice to coo a way on my fav track "Suffocated
Love". Rather than dance or hip-hop (certainly not trip-hop, what a crap
label, almost as bad as New Wave Of New Wave), it sounds me like the blues
or gospel music which happens to be set to a breakbeat. Speaking of blues,
although visibly awkward on stage, they blew the tacky dress off of PJ
Harvey when they opened for her in Toronto. Their material translated well
with a live band.
Also, someone mentioned that a track called "Exotika" is included on the new
domestic release of FSOL's "ISDN", just so I don't shoot myself for getting
the import, does anyone know if any other tracks are included?
Just got "Post" and will continue listening to "Hyper-ballad" (the chorus,
the drum machines piling up one by one) until my stereo overheats and blows up.
