Bass Kittens - Tyranny Of The Despot EP Mephisto Records MR 006 This Side: Get A Grip (mission street mix) Get A Grip (south of market mix) Other Side: Another Rainy Day OK, so there comes a time when the mercury in the thermometer threatens to crack up and out of it's casing. Sweating becomes a 'cant beat em, join em' kind of deal and I just go with the flow, strip off the Aphex T-shirt and reach for a slice of the "MACK". (Beamings about! Beamings about!) This months big 'MACK' track comes from our very own Jon Drukman. Those of you caught sleeping on his oxygen music works 'kittens-ripped-my-doohickey-dackey-bass-kitten-trackey' will have the opportunity to wear out your sub woofer with this west domestic TRItracker. Mephisto has driven home some shuffling funky stuff in a west coast break beat fashion, but not without the lamely limp associated with a lack of techno aggressiveness. (read: where's the beef!) The coming of the clutterbox to the drivers seat brings a stomp on the gas and a few nice hucks on the steering wheel. Get a grip will be remembered for driving home a carfull of techno bass bravado without leaving behind the groovy west coast passengers we love to pick up so much. OK, enough of the Bronco shit! Let's survey the coroners report: "Awwwwwwwwww" Get A Grip (mission street mix) An easy access intro to the Mission street bass quake starts us in the right direction. I've given this enough spins on the 1210's to experience an *eclipse* of bass in most every track that precedes the Gripper. Staggering ho downs and raunchy techno jabs careen around filtered aquatic organ loops and those trade mark SF tablas. I'm overjoyed to hear that Jon has taken my advise and concentrated on wonderfying his set ups and breakdowns. He jammin full-time. In fact, he is now just a db shy of receiving the Magic Mike Memorial Most Improved Bass Breakdown Oscar of Music. (M quad I double B OOM). I like that. :) Get A Grip (south of market mix) A quick right turn and we're heading down south of market. I gotta stop by my dub dealers. This one is On-U way, okay? Here, the pace of the stoking phlanged breakloops is much more relaxed. Elements of the mission street (electro blips) sink deep inside a 'natural' phat bassline pitched way back into market street posture. No obliteration/de/re/construction....This is a REAL remix. (Did I mention my Aphex T-shirt was off !). Another Rainy Day I've tried to flip the 12" several times to play the 'other side', but clearly 'this side' is too hot to handle. If you need to know the basics on the content of 'another rainy day' lets just say that this is more proof that JSD loves FSOL. Stay sweaty, Teep on the mackrise: J. Saul moving out the Octagon Man [yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes!]
