The big reason overlooked by most people is COST. When these machines were
out 10-15 years ago they cost a fortune. A basic mono synth like a Pro-1 /
SH101 cost £350-£450, thats probably £800-£900 today. A decent poly synth
with memories like the Prophet 5, was £3500, and a Jupiter 8 was over £4000
!!!! - Thats without any effects, no drum machine (TR909's were VERY
expensive) and it only played one sound.
If you wanted to make a record you needed a big studio, with lots of tracks.
Vince Clarke's (Yazoo) "Only You" was ALL recorded with a Sequential
Circuits Pro-1, even the drum parts, each part recorded individually (I have
the Pro-1 patch sheets for some of the sounds if anyone wants a photocopy!!)
Another big player in the dance scene are Samplers - Samplers were coming in
about that time, and you could pick up a Fairlight for round the cost of a
House!!! Also FX units just were not available for the home market, so once
you got your synth it sounded crap anyway!!
Things got better through the mid 80's, with prices coming down to around
£1500-£2000 but after the DX7, (ARRGG!!!!!) manufacturers like Roland went
Digital - more reliable, cheaper parts etc, they said it just became too
expensive to make Analog. Roland will never make a TB303 again because there
up their own arses raking the dosh in from S+S machines, Soundcards etc, and
they think it's a specialist market, for smaller companies (Deep Bass 9 etc..)
Another major key to the rise of Analog is affordable multi FX. All the new
keyboards you here today sound great, because they all have built in FX.
Take an old Analog synth add some FX, drive the res and cutoff off the
scales and then try and compare it with the present day technology - NO
COMPARISON !!
