This is a 1994 release but the material dates back to '92/'93 - apparently this is a compilation of the best of their early stuff on the Nucleus label. Initial impressions - THIS IS FUNKY, and yes, it's electro-influenced. But it's not the cheesey electro characterised by Jedi Knights, rather a more subtle journey through the genre, more along the lines of Drexciya. So if you're an avid follower of the current electro-revival fad, this is an essential purchase. The album kicks off with the appropriately titled "Electro Fish" and an Autechre-style bassline - this is one of the weaker cuts here but things steadily improve throughout the course of the record, reaching a climax around tracks 7 and 8 ("Neo Rio" and "Choobes"). The pace remains upbeat for eight out of the nine tracks, and I'm sure these sounds would move many a body on the dance floor. But there's more than enough melody incorporated here to ensure that this record also has a niche in the home-listening market aswell. Favourite tracks for me are "Choobes" which relies heavily on a "PHAT" bassline, later accompanied by sweeping synth tones which take things up a level, and - best of all - almost-title track "Detour" which is a much mellower affair, sporting warm sounds and a subtle melody, drawing things nicely to a close. All in all, this is a very good record, as evidenced by the fact that it hasn't left my CD-player since Saturday. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ' ' // _____ _____ _____________________ // ' ' // ||||\\ //|||| ___ ||||||||||||||||||||| /// -__ - _ _ -_ // |||| \\ // |||| ||// \\ ///// /// _-__ _ - _ // |||| |||| |||. ____ ///// /// _--- _ - _- // \\\\\ ///// // ` \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ \\\\\ ///// // ` ` ////////////// \\ // \\ \\\\\// // /// //// ///// \\ // \\ // /// //// ///// // \\////////////////// /// //// //////////////// // //// ///// / //// ///// jarvisr@bbsrc.ac.uk ///// ///// //////////
