At a big hoe down in Phoenix, AZ once I saw six or seven Donkeys trample a fence and invade the party... blew my mind! dave wright not breathing (one who would pay good money to bounce around donkeys)

i went to one rave where there were these 70+ year old people dressed as cowboys and cowgirls (not real ones but those fake vinyl ones)...anyway in the chill room they would walk around and say "howdy partner" and shoot silly string around...they did this in the main room too...anyway...the whole idea and everything was really quite trippy...that rave stands out to me because of it... just an idea amy

I was just recently put in charge and to promote a trance/techno/triphop room that just opened up in our afterhours club here in Edmonton. Since I haven't got the chance to travel alot and see what nifty things other people have in their clubs, I was just curious to know what amazing things you have seen done in clubs or at raves that was entertaining or just plain whacked. I already know about film projections, candy, funky lights and the like. I need something totally different that would really draw a crowd. Our scene isn't really that big in Edmonton and we are basically trying to create something out of nothing. Any ideas would be GREATLY APPRECIATED :) becca :) roggin@sas.ab.ca

Hmmm... I actually really hate all those kinds of things. I know that what draws me to a venue is if I know they're just going to play stuff I like (and new stuff), and there's going to be a good vibe. You could always rent out a dozen midgets or so, and keep them in a cage behind the dj. During the peak hour you could set them free to go ballistic. If you could rent out Mishu the world's smallest man, you could put him on a turntable to spin around and around in front of the dj..(He only weighs 16 pounds) What about renting the world's fattest man, and then dressing him up like Jabba the Hut. I also thought it would be cool to have an mc on helium. and so on........ I also like raves that had an out of control freak show like atmosphere.. some highlights of raves I have been to: dj's on hydrolic scaffolds going up and down in the air S and M cage acts a guy dangling from a rope 40 feet above the whole rave a guy up in the rafters above the rave nude dancers in dayglo body paint maze to get in the rave, then a slide into the entrance..... Some lame ideas that have gone on at raves: "DJ Unknown" the masked dj who reveals his identity at the end of his set... I went once to a hardcore party in NYC which had a bunch of people bouncing on trampolines (sic?)!!! I was so tripped out that I couldn't stop laughing. It just looked so whack with this crazy Rotterdam Gabber playing and kids bouncing on trampolines. I proceeded to the "ambient" basement which was completely covered in Mylar (tables and everything). Everything was silver and my friend, DJ Reade Truth, proceeded to tell me it looked like an elephant washing station. Ugh. Too much Lotus! Actually there was a group of trippers in NYC that did these crazy installations but I forget their name. The music was pretty shitty but they did things like huge mechanical waterfalls and such. Pretty cool actually. My rave favorite was couple of years ago here in Manse, when there were these two freako girls: the other was holding the leash, walking the other girl who was obviously her dog. Just thought it was a neat idea. Didn't have a chance to ask their phone numbers, though... :)

I saw Mad Professor live here in Tampere (would you believe it?) the last March. The Professor himself was standing behind the massive mixing console, and the MC (dressed in camouflage jungle kind of garment) was toasting before him, and there was also this other guy who took care of the old school reggae kind of songs. They had a wailing soul diva with them too (who they called Sister Venus) on some more garage/soul/handbag style of songs. So it was kind of mixed bag (they even tried some jungle!), and I liked the most their deep dub songs, heavily echoed and FXed, at which the Prof was unquestionably the best. They also played some new songs they had penned with the old nutta Lee 'Scratch' Perry himself :) so I guess I could call it a worthwhile evening. ERkki Tampere, pHinland trerra@uta.fi
