Haven't heard a lot about this record on the list, so I figured I'd mention it: Just picked up the Miki Yui: Small Sounds CD on BMB Labs, and after missing out on it when it first came out I'm pretty happy to say it's a very, very good record. "Small Sounds" is an apt description of this record, which is sixteen tracks of grainy, twittering beats, faded vocal samples and things from water to static to barely audible flute or recorder tweaking. Half enviornmental ambience, half music, also seems like a much less developed Lithops or Mouse on Mars (yeah, it's that minimal). Excellent for late nights. I think it is limited to something like 150 copies, but I got mine from Playing By Ear and I think they still have some. Rather expensive for lackluster packaging, but whatever. Much better than a lot of the Ash International/Touch/Mego/ Raster stuff I've been hearing lately, and I'm looking forward to more from BMB Labs. However, a note of warning: I don't recommend the first BMB Labs record - A. Krause's Schwellwert CD - at all. Just sounds like he turned on an amp and hooked a recorder to it. Ugh. There's a very fine line, I suppose. Yes the Miki Yui cd is a good one especially track 8 (honolulu) which i swear contains japanese vocal samples from the Nihongo Paku Paku website (http://www.twics.com/~ysdrunka/paku/). There was a fair amount of chatter about this Miki Yui cd when it came out in late August. Most people agree that it is right up there in quality & style with 1/Tau's monumental Hikuioto cd.

I actually enjoy the A. Krause Schwellert cd but I can definitely see how people who arent into experimental drones wouldnt be into this one. It's one of those throbbing hypnotic listens like Brian Eno's Neroli, Jake Mandell's Healing, or the Mesmer releases on Ash International (to name just a few of my favorite experimental drone releases). -->-Lance--- lance@inaudible.com p.o. box 450715 westlake, ohio 44145 united states --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I think the Miki Yui disc has its charms, but I doubt it would have occured to me to compare it to 1/Tau were it not for the rumored connection between the two. Miki Yui is so unassuming and unforced that it comes off as being a compendium of field recordings than the more (evidently) composed Hikuioto. Which I prefer anyway (but not on principle). If you're looking for something in the general style of Miki Yui with even more body-wracking presence than 1/Tau, check out the unbelievably great "Extract from field recording archive #1" CD from Toshiya Tsunoda. His MO for this release is the placement of microphones in/on particularly large objects (often found around shipping docks). These mics pick up the almost subliminal rumblings of the environment (people walking by, machinery, boats) and make them larger-than-life. At some points, they emit such massive waves of droning ebb/flow that you just may think about packing some Dramamine for archive #2. -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
