The fourth track of the Autechre 'Garbage' EP is beatless, and
comprises a single short phrase repeated over and over for 8 minutes,
modulo changes in effects processors. That being said, it's a very
nice little phrase, and as an ambient track in the minimalist vein
it works.
But ...
I was painting woodwork today, hunkered down on my hands and knees
trying hard not to get paint on the carpet. I had 'Garbage' playing.
I was digging this fourth track--great painting music. After a while
though I started thinking "this is a tad repetitious. Don't they know
when to quit?"
So I got up to change the disk, and noticed that I'd somehow triggered
single track repeat, and I'd been listening to the same track for 45
minutes.
So take it from me kids, it may be just a little 8 note phrase, but
it must be a pretty good one if it takes 45 minutes to get annoying
