"Finally, Michael Fakesch, one half of the Autechre-worshipping German outfit Funkstorung, redefines just what a DJ can do with Marion, crossing the line from mixer to remixer and in the process transforming others' works into original and identifiable tracks in and of themselves. Like Funkstorung, Fakesch solo is a big fan of fuzzy, stuttered beats, the tracks he's selected exploding into rhythmic static and garbled vocals. Existing at the other end of the spectrum from Hawtin and Goldie, Fakesch's cerebral work isn't especially danceable, demonstrating how more or less the exact same process--those decks and efx--can lead to wildly different results." This is kind of distorted, misleading, and, in the end, pretty much wrong, no? A shame coming from a usually reliable source of reviews. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I don't think I'd go so far as to call The Onion reliable for anything electronic; most everything I read (electronic reviews-wise) sounds like Entertainment Weekly when *they* try to review something like the recent LoFi's Big Beat Boutique release (I think it was either this week or last week). It's always obvious that they're relying WAY too heavily on skewered press packets and not enough on actually figuring the scene. Which, of course, is understandable for the audience both pubs are after. laz --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

But to chime in with my vote, I have to say I thought Fakesch's CD was perhaps the most lackluster album of 1999 and was a total letdown. I haven't heard anybody really talk about it anywhere, so I'm guessing that's the consensus. Well, seeing as most Funkstorung/Fakesch fans already have the vast majority of the tracks on this album, there's not much room for discussion. Don't forget, many of these tracks are four years old, so you can't really expect anything innovative. The most recent tracks, such as "Demon Stration" and "Jazdrive" are quite interesting though, especially the latter, which hints at possible new directions. i really like the marion cd. remember the tracks date back to 95 or 96. only a couple are new. i think the beat programmming and drum sounds are brilliant. \sometimes the melodies get too sunk in the mix. but all in all, i thought this was a very good collection from his demon e.p.'s. and its nice to have some of this stuff on cd too. one of the better releases of the year. IMO. later, greg davis autumn records http://www.amug.org/~jkdavis/autumn np: ISDS AeOtaku@aol.com wrote:
