I was recently listening to Aphex Twin SAW 1... All the tracks but two use the Roland R8 drum machine. This machine came out in 1990 I believe. So where do the years 85-92 come in? Did he record two tracks in 1985 and the rest five years later? This is not a dis, I'm just curious....... dietrich cakejax@phantom.com

I can't remember where I read it, but Richard James preconceived the ideas for a lot of these tracks before actually recording the entire tracks(85-92). Some of them were just the basslines & the melodies. He probably took it further during 85-92??? Check the interview pages in TEEX Vol. 1 Derek Jordan

they all sound like 808 to me. the r8 has 808 samples but the original came out in the early 80s... -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://cyborganic.com/~jsd

He definately uses the R8. I've owned both for years and there are many sounds (internals) used on SAW1, not to mention alot of the 808 sounds he uses sound like the ones on the 'Electronic' card(pitched higher and lower than the 'real' 808s-even if he played with the knobs inside). I just wanted to bring to life the fact that the dates on SAW1 seem like a little farfetched. dietrich cakejax@phantom.com

In Issue 6 of Future Music, April 1993 RDJ states: "I really hate the idea of using other people's equipment - I've got a bit obsessed, I suppose," he admits. "I don't want to use pre-programmed drum sounds, I've used modified [Roland TR] 808 sounds on "Ambient Works", but that's because the tracks are around four to five years old. Fact or fiction? I don't know but I've always been a bit sceptical of RDJ's 100s of unreleased tracks, started when I was 12, made all my own gear hype. Steve
