Hmmn. When I spoke with Mike at Ameba late Sunday afternoon, he said that he
was coming down here to L.A. tonight (i.e., Wednesday) and that he was flying
out of L.A. on Friday morning, which meant that he couldn't go into the KXLU
studio to do an interview with "Headspace" DJ Jose' late Thursday night.
I take it he decided to punt on his L.A. trip, then? I would have thought he
was coming down here to talk to some Virgin folks, at least.
I guess while I'm here I might as well put my two bits in regarding last
weekend's event.
One, I was spending the night trying to recite Hamlet ("To be or not 2C-B!
That is the question!" (-: ), so my impressions are somewhat warped ...
(Sorry Pete, I was kinda babbling when we left the boat but now I hope you'll
know why (-: )
(The boat trip itself was great; I've never cruised *under* the Golden Gate
Bridge and the Bay Bridge, and we floated past Alcatraz so close we could've
thrown the ropes out and docked ... )
His manager-ette (cum gf?) said that the PA problem was because they went down
to a studio where they heard the same PA that was hooked up to those massive
speaker towers at the Townsend Club where Plaid (nee' Black Dog) played. But
when they got on the boat, the promoter had supposedly done a "bait n' switch"
on them, and used a different PA than what was agreed to.
When he wasn't having technical problems the music was sometimes brilliant,
sometimes chaotic. If it wasn't due to Technical Difficulties, I'd say he
should work on his between songs bits just to keep a flow going. I did like
the way he took the familiar Tango N' Vectif stuff and changed the underlying
rhythms. Some of the previously-unheard material was pretty rad.
I agree with Pete in that one could get the impression that he was a prima-dona
from viewing his complaints from afar, but as usual one gets only a small
picture of reality, and the next day he and the lady were quite an affable chap
& chappess during the 5 minutes or so we chatted in Ameba. I got the basic
impression that he is a fairly shy type and is more than happy to let her speak
for him on occasion.
He basically told me everything that everyone else has already related; i.e.,
the 6-album deal with Virgin, problems with RePHLeX concerning "Bluff Limbo",
etc. He did confirm that Black Dog had broken up, not that's any real news to
us here.
In short, I don't think Pete got the whole picture and I don't think Joe
Babylon was warranted in flaming Pete about it either, so everybody take a
massive chill pill (-:

P.S. If I'm not mistaken, "Jake Slazenger" is taken from the British tennis
ball/raquet company, yes? (I don't recall any Star Wars characters by
that name, but then again I saw "Star Wars" in 1977 ... )
