First off, Derek I totally respect your reviews and always look
forward to reading them.
But I can't believe this wonderful review considering how awful I
thougt the first TURPH (it's called "jealousy" or something like that).
THis isn't the same one you're talking about, is it? I forgot the official
E.P. title and the catalog number. IMHO the "Jealousy" record is TOTALLY
unfunky, disjointed (not in the good way), un-usable, and experimental
growling pimp-ish type beats that begin and end nowehere, really. I do love
a good dose of genre experimentation but this just seemed to do nothing for
me, I remember trying to make myself like it. ;) It just sounded
unfinished, or under developed, or maybe I was supposed to be sniffing
Testor's Model Glue while listening (?). Not even that good for just
listening, I certainly would NEVER argue that something has to be mixable
to be good, I was just expecting something totally different from PROBE I
guess.
Disclaimer: I DO like most of Himadri's work (and "A Place Called
Bliss"), like for example the *excellent* PERCEPTRON (sp?) E.P. on the
SWITCH A/V label, but the TURPH - Jealousy release on probe was so
disappointing for me.... But this one must be a definite improvement, eh?
Listening is believing, I'll certainly give it a good try......
P.S. - My all time fave PROBE prob. has to be TESTE's "the wipe" or the 2
HARDTRAX records (done by Hawtin): "Hardphunk" and then followed up by
"Cowboyphunk." Classics, IMHO. Wish he'd make some more records like
those 2 beauties. :) Great "house to techno" transitional trax.
respectfully,
