as i was riding by watching the landscape i noticed a large tank behind a hospital. a large label on the tank read 'air liquide'. a big blue symbol with a white line thru it also adorned the tank, and if my memory does not fail me, it looked a bit like the 'nephology' cover! perhaps this is where the duo (sometimes trio or more) got their name? i think the massive attack vs. mad professor album is worth the price for the cover alone. i balked at getting it though. aphex's classics demanded purchase. and so did ventolin. anyway, on to the somewhat more serious tip...i couldn't help myself and bought something i should not have...i usually stick to buying things on my list, but found something that wasn't on my list...recycled for the environment by the moody boyz...2 cd's, and i heard it had some jungle mixes on it. i figured tony thorpe could do some good jungle. so i broke my rules and bought something i should not have. but the good part is i really should have had this on my 'must buy' list along. it's just great stuff. the first track is junglish, and sounds very different. i wish more jungle artists and producers could produce jungle tracks that sound unique like this. some good ambient tracks on this too...and it's all much better than any other moody boyz'z track i've ever heard. i notice that a few tracks are credited to black dog too... only one jungle track though... -- o _/,_ . /o...\__// fk453@cleveland.freenet.edu \_'__/``\` \`

Speaking of Air Liquide, I picked up their Robot Wars EP on Sm:)e yesterday (thanks Robi!) and I must say that it is _all that and a box of Scooby Snax_. Monster funky, an electro-revival record that takes that crucial next step and does something new with the influences. Can anyone more familiar with AL tell me if they've done anything else in this vein? Unfortunately the Tusken Raiders _Bantha Trax_ EP sucks rocks. First really weak record from Mike Paradinas. Anyway, stay tuned for this and many more ramblings (Ectomorph, *three* Drexciya EPs, Aux 88, Jedi Knights) in the upcoming all-electro-revival freeke reviews #9. :) On now: Namlook 8 & 9 (really digging that Klaus Schulze-meets-the-Dust Brothers bit in Namlook 9). ----------------------------------------------------------------- dave walker, detroit art services marmoset@msen.com me & my robots

Absolutely! I like this record so much I ran out to grab their double-cd on Sm:)e, which doesn't even come close. Those breathy female vocals rub me entirely the wrong way. These two (three?) are clearly very talented. Maybe next time? The older acid tracks I've heard are pretty stunning as well. What about their two earlier albums?

Nephology is entertaining and hypnotic at times and funky other times and very lengthy throughout. Since I record IDM-ish stuff, I end up disecting it a little too much: they don't particularly mask the identity of the machines that they are using. A friend of mine has the clear blue 7" AL single and it is funkier. Nephology has a merely-ok female voice saying "...nephology" in that French-nympho-film-genre style. Predominately thin pads and ambient 303-101-ARPish stuff. Higher Int'l Agency's "Colourform" is similar but more complex and inventive overall. Review mode off.
