As I'm feeling thoroughly bored with the number-crunching that I'm currently doing, I thought I would call upon the infinite erudition of this list and ask for help on the following artists/groups/labels: UBIK: This guy has helped Lagowski (GPR) in the past and I hear he has a full-length CD out. Has anyone heard it, and if so, is it the nice crunchy hardtrance that sets my pulse racing? NICO: (a.k.a. Nikolai Vorkapich): I had asked about him ages ago on the alt.rave newsgroup but got no response. Does anyone know what releases he has out and where I can get more? The only ones I know of are a few 12"s, compilation appearances and the absolutely phenomenal "Axia One" CD. The latter is on Strictly Rhythm (!), who have steadfastly refused to reply to my incessant queries. Mr. Nico credits Tetsu Inoue and Lenny Dee in the aforementioned Axia One, so I know his head is screwed on right, but for the rest, he remains an enigma--e.g. is he a New York boy or one of the Flying Dutchmen? The MFS label: Anyone have the new address? I didn't get any replies last time I asked this question. I can't believe I'm the only one to own an MFS CD.. Can someone help me out? Ubik? One of my favorite all time techno creators. Shit, how do I describe their music? Kinda like LFO, but with more sequences, more changes, more melodies. Second try: cold dark electro bleepy pagan techno. Most songs have a heavy emphasis on rhythym, with a tribal electro feel, the shit is real robotic. I tried! Ubik consits of Viv Beeton and Dave Cambell, both are from the U.K. If you really want their shit bad call Zoom records in England, at first all I had was the System Overload e.p. and I went ballistic for it, so after searching high and low for their shit I ended up calling Zoom and got hooked up with a bunch more of their vinyl. Also they were interviewed in DJ magazine about a year to a year and a half ago under their cult heroes section, I can't find my copy, but when and if I do, I can post it. I dunno about Ubik, but if "nice cruncy hardtrance" sets your pulse racing, run - I repeat, run, don't walk - to get a copy of "Re-Load - The Compilation" out on (wouldn't ya know it) Re-Load. Back at the start of the Great IDM Debate a week or so ago, our young friend Forrest a.k.a. Ozy posited that Re-Load isn't "Hardcore"; well, there are at least 3 tracks on this comp that fit *my* definition of "Hardcore" (no, we're not talking the Blighty version that the rest of us call "Breakbeat") - including Trax-X's "Gravity", which is most definitely "Hahdcoah" in just about anybody's language. Now, those are the tracks that are worth passing over, because the rest of it is "crunchy hardtrance" and it's mighty tasty stuff. It includes, among other things: - That Felix Da Housecat "Thee Morning After (Drum Drum mix)" track that Forrest expressed his love for a few weeks ago - Two different Dave Clarke tracks (Dave Clarke Red 2 - "Wisdom To The Wise" and Dave Clarke Red 1 - "Protective Custody"; the latter featuring a rather obvious sample copped from Ministry's "Stigmata") as well as an awesome remix of Aphrohead's "In The Dark We Live" - one of those tracks with those patented German "express train through your skull" rhythm tracks that I personally wet my nappies over - A track by Virtus that neatly skirts the line between "Hardcore" and "crunchy hardtrance", mostly by liberally sampling an extra-crunchy Aphex backbeat ... - Other great tracks by Accelerator, Psychonautic Experiments 2 and an interesting offbeat Ambient track by Chronos, which is being released by their Re-Load Ambient sub-label Not strictly "IDM", I suppose, but "crunchy hardtrance" is pretty intelligent stuff in my book ... heartily recommended if you're into sort of thing. - Greg

More from the Ubik boys - don't forget 2 "Autonation" EPs, one on R&S, (which I don't have) and one on some obscure UK label -sorry can't remember- (which I do have) One of the tracks off the second found its way onto the third "Give Peace a dance" comp, but retitled and credited I think to Ubik instead of Autonation. (Note the N in the name - nothing to do with anyone who has ever called themselves "Automation" with an M) Regarding Nico, he brought us "Dark Star". Autonation? No shit, never heard of it, but now it is on my search list. Thanks for the info. Regarding the track on Give Peace a Dance Vol 3- the Truth Vibration/Rise, these also appear on the backside of the Ubik Pagan single.

There is also another Nico 12" called Moonfrog which I think is on ESP.>

Don't forget the IST 12" with the amazing track called "Alpha". NICE. There was also at least one C&S records release called "noise control". Not quite as intimidating as Alpha, but pretty good. This is available on CD too. Older release called "Jam on the Moon" has the original "Darkstar", the one mentioned in an earlier post is just the intro to a real nice hard hard hard trancer. ---> 13013
