I wondered why no-one had mentioned Prodigy when talking about politics in dance music! Check out "Their Law" for a pretty unambiguous response to the Criminal Justice Bill (- "fuck 'em, and their law!"). The inner sleeve is really great too; a rave in the sun, and the rest of society under darkness. I'm not sure it's all intelligent though - do IDMers listen to the Prodigy?

this one does! while i wouldn't class the Prodigy in the IDM _genre_, i certainly think their music is intelligent dance music. and some of the remixes, like Johnny L's remix of "One Love," are pretty IDM-type stuff. - Dan lo.fat.sig - A51 recording productions - FTZ * US/Finland - lo.fat.sig http://freedom.wit.com/~klf/klfhome.html * Dan Nicholson +1-908-687-3479

I do. I listen to some rap, a lot of house, ambient, all forms of "techno" from idm through to hard acid and even gabber, a bit of jungle, dub, and some classical. Well that's enough about me! I'm sure if everyone started telling us what genres they listen to we'd all get bored very quickly. The Prodigy doesn't really fit under this "idm" banner as we use it, but it is dance music with an intelligent attitude, even if a lot of it ends up as little more than a "rush" once you get it to the dancefloor (nothing wrong with that!!) Well, I for one listen to The Prodigy, and saw them live twice in '94. I think it's IDM, since Liam work hard with his music, and it has much more depth than any EuroDance you can name. Playing live, they don't just load up the sequencer and press Go. The MC and the two dancers creates a show that beats up any Live PA. /Henrik

Umm, how about Orbital? All they do is stand behind their equipment and bop around, but it's still great. Far better than the Prodigy dancers' crash course in on-stage improvisation. Watching Liam is incredible actually--it's just one guy flying around behind about 5 keyboards and other equipment. Too bad you have to peer around three complete baffoons to see him. In fact, the night I saw the Prodigy, I also saw Moby (a complete joke in retrospect) and CyberSonik (hard as granite). Sami

You saw them in Hulstfred then? Well, I did too but I think their live show just *sucked*. Liam's all right, I can't see the point in that MC 'cat eyes' shouting all the time over the music and doing some macho rock idol shit like shouting 'SHOW ME YOUR APPRECIATION!!!'. The 'madman' who looks like Ozzy Osborne's long lost son is no good ((start the dance)) either. Liam don't need nobody, I'd like to see him dump the rest of the 'band'.. !; ) Or at least the sucker MC.. out, pirkka ..onnow: 'finest kiss' by the boo radleys..

Strange that although Liam is almost the sole input into the music (see "Poison" for an exception!) I have read an interview where he said that it just wouldn't be the Prodigy without the other three. I've never seen them live, but I guess a lot of their fans love it - it takes all sorts... I'm happy to just enjoy the music off record. (It takes all sorts...)( J ^

In case you didn't know there is a book out on the Prodigy called Electronic Punks by Martin Roach. It is "the official story" of the Prodigy. I kind of gave up on the Prodigy until I heard "Music For The Gilted Generation" especially the Narcotic Suite side, that is some SERIOUS shit, but it doesn't get the underground respect it deserves, because of thier "sellout" reputation. Too bad, but I don't think Liam is too worried about it as he counts his stacks of cash.
