OK, this'll be the last thing i type from i-D no.137....
*CLEAR RECORDS*
They just want to be known by their first names: Clair, Hal, Nas and
David. Together they have formed Clear Records to release cutting-edge
electro tracks and sharp new school electronics. "I don't think
electro had a fair go first time around," says 21-year-old Clair. "It
just got rushed into house and hip hop. I don't think enough people
made it". Previously involved with running underground cult label
Rephlex, Clair feels she can now stretch out and follow a more
personal course: "Clear's there to represent electro because it's my
favourite music. It just throws me off this planet." Their debut
release comes from Global Communication as The Jedi Knights and is a
freestyle fusion that recalls Juan Atkins, Steinski and more recent
techno possibilities. "We're trying to do something more exciting
than electronic listening music," states Hal. "I listen to a lot more
current sounds, and think where's the feeling, funk, rhythm and soul
gone?" Into Clear, hopefully, as established '90s artists start to
record for the label. Already Autechre and Mu-Ziq's Mike Paradinas are
working for them under the names Gescom and Jake Slazenger, with
Norway's Mono Junk and The Black Dog also showing interest. The
razor-sharp, stupid fresh and white-lightning funk of electro looks
set for both a revival and a reinterpretation. - Tony Marcus
