Leo Anabaldi's 12" Acid Pop on ACV was probably the one record that
had the most influence in attracting me to techno as a music form.
I bought it sometime in 88/89-ish, and just from home listening, I
knew that it was an all-time classic. However, it wasn't until a
fledgling DJ friend of mine (Surgeon from Brum's own House of God -
shameless plug!) played it over a PA that I truly appreciated the
barely shacked power and savagery of this truly outstanding record.
(not savagery as in mental 'ardcore, but savagery as in having
the ability to leave you aurally post-traumatic and dazed, but also
feeling fundamentally touched or changed in some way).
(Sorry if this seems over the top, but my first club experience of
Acid Pop made quite an impression on me.)
As far as trying to describe it: it is fairly minimal and repetitive,
builds in a similar way to Acperience, uses gorgeous fat acidic
sounds, and the crescendo, as mentioned above, is rapacious
in its intensity
I have since donated this record to my DJ mate, and whenever he plays
it, it still has the ability to make the crowd go ape-shit.
Cheers,
Tay.
