Now while everyone's busy at the old skool Electro subject, I'd like to remind you to check out 'Classic Electro Mastercuts Volume 1' compilation (CUTSCD 19), which came out last year on Beechwood Music's Mastercuts series, best known for their quality re-releases of classic funk, rare groove and house. I have to admit some of these tracks sound quite hilarious now and bring me back memories of those silly videos of whirling breakdancers back in '84, but Herbie Hancock's 'Rockit' and 'The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash', with its tens of samples - everyone from Queen to Chic - still kick. According to the record sleeve all these are full length 12" mixes, and there are also great liner notes from Greg Wilson, one of the leading Electro DJ's of England in the early 80's. Volume 2 is also on its way, with hopes to gain clearance to include the classic 'Planet Rock' by Afrika Bambaattaa on it... Sorry, I don't know about the U.S. release of this one, but I hope you can all check out this comp. The trax are: 1. Rockers Revenge featuring Donny Calvin - Walking On Sunshine 2. Peech Boys - Don't Make Me Wait 3. Grandmaster & Melle Mel - White Lines (Don't Do It) 4. Man Parrish - Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don't Stop) 5. Tyrone Brunson - The Smurf 6. C.O.D. - In The Bottle 7. Newtrament - London Bridge Is Falling 8. Hashim - Al-Naafiysh (The Soul) 9. Whodini - Magic's Wand 10. Time Zone - The Wildstyle 11. Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel Next, how about a Mastercuts collection on the original Acid House stuff of '86-'89? 'Acid Trax' by Phuture seems to be near impossible to get in your hands these days... At least here in Nowheresville where I live :) In for the breakdance revival, ERkki

You can get Acid Trax on the compilation "House Hallucinates: Pump Up The World Volume One" along with several other total acid classics. This is a domestic (US) compilation that's been out of print for a while, but should be easy to find in the used bins. Streetlight Records on Market St in San Francisco has several copies. I highly recommend it... Here's the track list: Sleezy D: I've Lost Control (space mix) Phuture: Acid Trax Jungle Wonz: Time Marches On (justin strauss remix) William S: I'll Never Let You Go (instrumental) Farley Jackmaster Funk: Jack The Bass Maurice: This Is Acid Liddell Townsell: As Acid Turns Jack Frost: Dap Me Mr Lee: Pump Up New York (dub mix) Phuture: Phuture Will Survive A&M Records, Catalog CD 3928, copyright 1988 -- Name: Jon Email: jsd@cyborganic.com Web: http://cyborganic.com/~jsd

and I'll second that reccomendation, classic acid tracks. This was one of my best sale bin picks of all time - found at a Goodwill store and cost be a whopping 99cents for two slabs of 303 heaven. This also received a full UK release though I haven't seen it recently. I think the track listing is much the same, but they used a "Pump up London" version of the Mr Lee track and called the LP "HH: Pump Up London..." There were other tracks on the Phuture EP however - these popped up elsewhere, The "Phuture Jacks" track is on Streetsound House Trax (vol 1 I think), though not in full as its mixed in. That was the first Acid track I ever heard! J ^ James Skilton aka Steady J - jamess@firefox.co.uk ^---+ What's in the basket? My Brother!

Yep. I've got it. Same cover art as the domestic, too. Came out right around the time of the New Techno Sound of Detroit comp on VirginUK (that interestingly enough, didn't have a domestic pressing). It also has pictures of "Magic" Juan and friends inside the gatefold. But that one is pre-acid and pure detroit roots. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Michael King mike%delta1@rex.cs.tulane.edu Delta Systems New Orleans, LA 70002-4938 Voice: 504.837.9835 Fax: 504.837.9838 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ You can always tell a pioneer by the arrows in their back ------------------------------------------------------------------------
