Busy Record-Buying week for me. Now I'm poor! Headz - Mo' Wax Comp I've stayed away from stuff labeled 'acid jazz' because it sounds like old Hubert Laws records to me. I've got the originals, why buy the retreads? BUT, this is a horse of a different color. Wacky samples, odd noodling, and laid back grooves. I doubt it's possible to dislike this record. I bought the CD, you should consider the vinyl, as it probably sounds just as good at 45. Analog Heaven - VA (Sonic Records) Busy boy Taylor Dupree and his pal Dietrich give you a little bit of this and that from the New York acid scene. The quality varies widely, from the dance-floor-only, through grooving to phenomenal (check out 'Gamelan' by Essa 3) Plastikman - 'Musik' More chewy analog textures from the Great White North. Find speakers or headphones with some good high end, as several cuts feature some great sinus clearing filter sweeps, and lots and lots of 303 experimentation. This is music about the technology (the props list starts off with credits to Robin Whittle, designer and builder of the fabled 303 Devilfish modification), and as such it's as close to absolute music as you'll get. And you can dance too it, so get busy! The History of Our World Part One - Breakbeat & Jungle Mix by DJ DB I no longer need to drink coffee in the morning. Breaks and Jungle are still way underground in the US, so I plunked down for this number because there aren't many other places to get jungle/breaks on CD. First impression: Headz (see above) played at 78. There are a lot of great cuts here, most clocking less than 3 minutes. I especially like: "Roots 'N Future" (phuture assasins) which starts out with a vocal reggae sample and then goes double time into almost a synth-ska thing. "Paragone" (international rude boyz) Shades of Muziq! "Incredible Base" Oaysis Goofy Sample-thon, with Chuck D saying "How low can you go?" and great rhythms. Now some of you may have a long list of the real shit on 12" but I'm in Iowa - people aren't dancing here at 5 AM, they're milking cows. I think this record is a good introduction to the genre. -- Kent Williams -- kent@gilligan.cadsi.com Get high, get above yourself, look down upon yourself, to the inside of yourself, look in front and back of yourself to the back and front of yourself, is inside of yourself and then you see your own head and know yourself is your self, 'cause when you find yourself you're going to find that yourself is only your self and the self that can only be your self. So when you're in front or in back of yourself, you'll find that your mind is in the center of yourself, and God is nothing but yourself. And when you reach for yourself you'll know that yourself is the only thing that can happen to yourself so that nothing can put you down. - DJ Shadow

this is perhaps the >worst< mix cd available right now. the mixing is dreadful, consisting of mere spin backs and slapping the next tune on. it's certainly not 'thislisty' but i'm not telling you to take it elsewhere. if you want THE real deal, you must purchase this: various - 'renegade selector series 2.2' crammed/selector sel 2 i got my copy at tower. it consists of a megamix by dj randall (a real junglist dj, not like dj db) and the mixing is so unbelievably flawless...i almost lost track of where tracks began and ended... the material is (yes! believe it or not!) very 'thislisty'! if i have to use the word intelligent then i will! nice dreamy tunes with deep bass lines and great drums. a few vocal samples ehere and there. one the megamix is over you get 4 full length bonus tracks, including origin unknown's remix of 'dread bass' which is incredible. if you want to listen to what 'intelligent jungle' or 'deep jungle' (as i prefer to call it now, i think) then this is the compilation to buy. it's only $15.99 for an import! -- . _/,_ . /o...\__// \_'__/``\` \`

Hmm... glad I didn't buy it. I was hunting for it for a while because I read reviews in 2 different music mags that claimed it was "essential". I bought Moonshine's Law of The Jungle instead.
