hmmm, i don't think the CD version of 'Tango' was available in '93. so, it's definitely fair game. i do think paying attention to dates would help keep this 'year end' poll pertinent. yet, perhaps we can squeeze in one last question on the ballot: best sale bin score of the year (read: cheap 'dated' material) Teep some ambient text for you all . why should it apply to '94 releases only? stuff released in '93 might be extremely influential in '94. if you listened to it in '94 and it mattered to you it should count. rb

You're right that the CD wasn't available until this year - I disagree, though, with your reasoning that the reissue makes it a '94 release. I guess Mr Burrell will have to make a ruling on this one. :)

What's the point of calling it a best of '94 poll then? Either releases from this year are the only ones that should count (or things released some arbitrary date late last year, which would only make things more confusing), or we might as well call it an alltime best of idm poll. We've done that before. But again, I defer to the pollster's judgement. (If he announces that the year of release is irrelevant, though, I'll feel real funny voting for Keith LeBlanc's 'Major Malfunction' from 1986). BTW: in my original post, I didn't mean to imply that 'Incunabula' isn't worthy of consideration, I assumed from all the reviews of 'Amber' I've read here saying it's much better than the debut that Autechre fans would more likely choose the new one. My apologies for any offense. C. -- (Chris.Hilker) cspot@hyperreal.com

Aye, said the bannister. This reminds me of 1986, when Robert Heartburn ... erm, Hilburn (chief L.A. Times Pop Music Critic *cough*) put "Psychocandy" in his Top Ten list for that year, even though it was released November 11th, 1985. Of course, the reason he did was because it wasn't until 1986 that a freebie U.S.-pressed (Sire) copy crossed his desk ... I guess that means that it didn't exist before then. But hey, don't get me started on Critics ... or Top Ten polls, for that matter; I think both of them are pointless and stupid. Buy what you want to buy and like what you want to like and make up your own internal Top Ten if you want. - Greg

I rated "Incunabula" as my favourite LP of 93 overall, and "Right in the night" by Jam & Spoon as my favourite single overall (I'm not just an IDM'er!) I may well rate "Amber" as my favourite of 94, but I have to give it some thought. My thoughts on poll eligibility would be if the disc has (c) and (p) 1994 on it, then it is eligible. Surely that's pretty unequivocal? J ^ James Skilton aka Steady J - jamess@firefox.co.uk
