Last weekend while shopping I happened upon a 7" single by Moby. The song on the A side was New Dawn Fades, by Ian Curtis (lead singer of Joy Division). Has anybody heard this and can you review it for me? And, do you know if this appears on CD somewhere? The song is actually a Joy Division song, as they all were. (No separate credits)

Well, fellow IDM denizens Jonathan and Andy had it down at KUCI in Irvine CA, and we gave it a test spin. The other side is a Moby-returns-to-his-Punk-roots riff-a-rama Punk workout; the "New Dawn Fades" cover was even slower than the original - Joy Division on Mandrax. I wasn't terribly impressed, but then again I'm in the owned-everything-JD-ever-did JD-covers-are-sacriledge camp (-: (I will grant some begrudging respect to Michael Gira's attempt at LWTUA, but that's partly because I was a big Swans fan ... ) On the one hand I'm glad to see that Moby doesn't feel shackled to the Techno pigeonhole, but I'm not sure what to make of it. Is it merely a Tribute to His Roots kinda thing, or an effort on his part (or Elektra's) to "branch out"? If the latter, I'm not sure how far it's going to get him, and doing Punk songs and Joy Division covers isn't exactly stretching musical boundaries these days, hmmn? - Greg

Re: I'm in the owned-everything-JD-ever-did JD-covers-are-sacriledge camp> i'm in that camp too, and reacted at once with wretched dread upon reading that MOBY had covered New Dawn Fades. these are the sorts of revivals that make you realize more than ever the death of that revived. especially when the one in charge is MOBY, whose music has always struck me as having far less achievement and taste than it pretends to have. it's not rock bottom, but there are better exemplars of contemporary synthetic music. but first reactions, at least mine, tend to be conservitve. JD covers are indeed sacriledge, but isn't that sacriledge in some sense the point of IDM (whether or not we include MOBY in that category)? Joy Division are up there with Kraftwerk and Velvet Underground in terms of the tremendous-epoch-in-the-history-of-pop sort of thing, but at least part of what gives IDM that very status as well, what makes it an edifice in that very history, is its unabashedness about covering the past. and i mean "cover" in every sense of the term. original/ copy; our time/ their time; my creation/ your creation - these are questions than they are intact answers. "sacriledge" is a problem because the sacred is a problem. IDM creates interest in wandering from its proper property, in trespassing. (the sound of the sample always includes the resonance of a question - what is "the proper" at all? how is it constituted?) IDM isn't a band, it's a vague area - that's what gives it redolence. it's as great as JD because it does what JD never would have done. but i write too much, perhaps becuse i am trying to convince myself first of all. am i convinced?...

I just re-subscribed to this list after an absence, so I don't know if this has been mentioned, but Moby is also featured in the current Rolling Stone (the one entitled: Generation Next - The Future Of Music). He's one of the few who actually got interviewed, and he's the *only* artist in there making music in any field related to this one, unless you count Bjork, which I wouldn't. I'm seriously considering firing off a letter (you can email them, but I forget the address now) asking them why someone more "suitable" (like FSOL or RDJ) was not even pictured, but frankly, I expect complete ignorance of this field from Rolling Stone. BTW, Moby's interview is absolutely laughable. I don't know why everyone's slagging on Moby. If you don't like his stuff fine, but aside from his records he treads pretty lightly on the planet, as far as I can tell. I don't have much use for most of what I've heard of his, but in the virtual world of e-mail, I've had a couple of very civil exchanges. Give it to us straight Jamie -- when that brass ring comes around and your finger's hooked through it, are you going to say "No sir, I don't like it?"
