I just got thru listening to the Sun Electric & Thomas (isn't it amazing
how he seems to be everywhere that Sun Electric is?) Fehlmann remixes of
Yello's "Do It". The original track is bog standard house fare featuring a
gravelly voiced, barely sung, utterly banal lyric, and an execrable "Do It"
sample (Are they getting money from Nike or what?). The original song
could be best described as "UnIDM". The SE & TF mixes are thankfully much
better.
The SE "Spin Out & Mellow" mix is 7:10 and features a weird bass sound that
kind of sounds like gated 60 Hz hum. They do throw the sample & some of
the vocals in the mix, albeit way in the back. It's a nice track, very
laid back; I wish they had lost the vocals.
The TF "Flow" mix is 7:41 and more dancefloor oriented - stronger bassline
& beats. One verse of the lyrics are featured, up in the mix,
unfortunately, as is that stoopid sample. If I could only get rid of them,
I'd be very happy w/ this track.
My recommendation is: only for the hardcore Sun Electric fan. 14 minutes
of decent music for $5-7 is just not cost effective, given that you can
sometimes get 140 minutes for $20. Go out and buy Thomas Fehlmann's "Flow"
ep instead. It's much cooler.
