I fully agree with what was said, pity I missed the root of this discussion but anyway. As for "endless guitar wanking" I don't think we can limit this idea merely to prog rock ala '70's psuedo bongo music, this discription IMO goes for a lot of what we call COCK ROCK here in S.Africa. Cock Rock is psuedo MTV shitty sub-Seattle rock spurted forth by young white male ego trippers. This is a subject I feel very strongly about 'cause I've come up against the brunt of COCK ROCKERS. In S.A. these guitar heros (they think they are gtr heros) are so obsessed with standard grungy rock forms that they believe that electronic music isn't music and that when my band _RED FRIDAY_ plays live we just stand up on stage in front of a computer. I don't believe that standing up on stage with a computer or two is a form of cheating, it's a extension to our creative means. The fact that our sounds are synthetic doesn't mean that music we make isn't real.

Another good point, wanking synths can prove very tiresome. There's a lot of shit out there, especially this commercial techno that gets pumped in trendoid clubs here. This has caused alot of people's perceptions of what techno, idm and ambient is all about to be extremely warped. People who have heard our music, denigrate _RED FRIDAY_ for not making real songs. Well f.k them 'cause we're not compromising our musical integrity by producing 4 minute pop standards. I leave that up to the 2 Unlimited and 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor of this world.

Yup, I hope that in 15 years time when I'm a late 30 something going on 40 I'll be into innovation, not showing everyone how _Aphex Twin_ made real music and that the 2005 trends are mindless noise. There are really two or three issues here. I hope that I am open minded enough to listen to whatever new forms of music are created and I hope that at least some of the music I listen to today will still be listenable. I think a sign of a good artist is if their music still sounds fresh after several years. If their music isn't so tied to a particular technology that when the world moves on to new technologies their music sounds dated. One of the reasons I like idm is the (possibly unfounded) belief that I will still want to listen to some of this stuff on occasion ten or twenty years down the line. That at least some of the music is innovative and original enough that it will still grab my attention even when I'm older.
