It's pretty good BUT ... all IDM-hedz should check out the remixes on a doublepack (ART 5.1 / 5.2). There is an INCREDIBLE Black Dog mix that's one of their best and a fantastic Statis mix too. A.R.T. is an essential label for trainspotter techno fans! and if you don't have 'Philosophy of Sound and Machines' you need one. ONNow : Luke Slater 'My Yello Wise Rug' - even better than 4 cornered room!

Y'know, every once in a while I get backed into a corner and someone demands to know why I evolved into a total Techno/IDM-head after having floated through the various scenes (Punk -> Nouveau Mod -> Post Punk -> Ska/Two-Tone -> Goth -> Industrial) over the past 15 years or so. I explain about things like positivism, being tired of walking around garbed in black and combat Doc's and pissing and moaning about how the world is going to pot, etc. - y'know, the stock answers. Something in Mixmaster Morris' postings has resonated in me, and it's part of what I can add to my "Why I like this scene and this music" explanations. Here is someone who, being world-reknowned in this field, could easily have a large Ego-with-a-capital-E, deigning not to interact with us "commoner" folk; or dismissing with a virtual hand-wave others working in the field whose work might not approach the heights of his own or others deemed worthy. Instead, what I have noticed is that invariably, he chooses to *always* praise the work of others, always mentions the *positive* aspects of the scene he encounters, and I've *never* seen him slag off *anyone* else or anyone's taste in music or the scene somewhere else, etc. I don't know about anyone else, but that rates a mighty big "P" for Positivity in my book. Much respect to the Mixmaster from far across the big Pond ... [ Before some wag accuses me of being a kiss-ass, I have no personal motivation to do so, and have nothing at stake for doing so either. I just felt like saying this ... ]

OK, OK, now I can't take it anymore - every time I go to DMC I pick up that Luke Slater double-album + Ambient 12" on PeaceFrog (the one with the almost all-black cover; can't remember the name at the moment - arggggh). I stare at it for a few and go "Hmmmn ... " and then put it back. Is that a mistake? (I thought the "Spadang" track on IOTD5 was OK, but nothing spectacular.) - Greg

I would like to recommend the VirualSex compilation on Buzz to everybody. It's a few years old now and Buzz seems to be gone, so grab this album if you see it!

Luke also has a track on 'Trance Europe Express 3' which is very *deep*. The Mu-Ziq track on this one is absolutely amazing! :) Some other of my favourite tracks on this comp are by Air Liquide, Link and Mouse On Mars. Richard James' track is one of his experimental hard ones. Listen before you buy this! There are also some cheesy tracks on this comp! Most of the old ART back cat is now owned by Beechwood, and much was released under Objects D'art. ART2 "Philosophy of Sound and Machine" was an ART / Rephlex joint project. There are murmers of a possible re-release. I'll keep you informed.
