Ibiza is one of the Balearic islands in the Mediterranean off Spain and one of the most popular overseas holiday destinations for people in Britain. The clubs there were a major influence on the development of the British rave scene circa '88-'89, with people like Boys Own, Shoom, Flying, etc. attempting to recreate over here what they'd seen on their summer holidays. A lot of the DJs there at the time (Alfredo is generally cited as the most influential) had a style of playing happy tracks from across a range of genres that just happened to feel right in the mix, earning it the 'Balearic' tag. These days most of the clubs are more straight housey with a never-ending succession of British DJs guesting through the summer. Cafe Del Mar is a beachside cafe and one of the few redeeming features in the 'town' of San Antonio, which is otherwise a touristy dump. To help you relax they play nice restful ambient stuff, more in the sort of ambient house style than the darker North European or neo-hippy bollocks that seems to have taken hold of late. It's attracted lots of musicians and DJs when they've been out there, hence it being immortalised on a couple of tracks and main DJ Jose Padilla getting to put together a compilation of Cafe Del Mar type tracks.

Yup, from London, no idea why they chose the name.

No.
