I know this is slightly off-topic, but I know some of you might be
interested in this, particularly those interested in the IDM compilation
project. I unearthed (it was well hidden! wonder why) a freeware
program that does MPEG audio compression and decompression. It's pretty
good, too - I was able to squeeze a 30 meg sound file into 3 megs or
so and it still sounded impressive. Anyways, I've set up a web page
with these samples and the source code. It's at
http://www.wired.com/~brian/mpg/
The original 44.1 khtz file, the mpeg audio file, and the uncompressed
audio file is there for checking out. I put up 30-second samples from
the Blade Runner soundtrack and the Shamen :)
