Well, I couldn't disagree with you more. (1) Maybe we've never heard the great breakbeat, because it took Orbital's unique insights to move the style into a golden age. (2) Maybe we've never heard the great Orbital, because it took the addition of the influence of breakbeat for them to reach their peak. (3) I'm certainly glad the Beatles didn't stick with "Twist and Shout" for ten years :-). (4) Some people say that rave/techno scene isn't as good as it used to be, or that techno music isn't as good as it was. IF SO, it looks to me like this Balkanization into many tiny little styles could be a big reason why.
