A guy came into the record store where i work last night and
spent two hundred and seventy pounds (sterling, that is) on Fax stuff
on CD. A number of thoughts ran through my head at that point:
(i) wish i could do that;
(ii) if i could do that, I'd probably feel bad if i did, as i would find
it hard to justify spending that amount of cash on myself in such a self-
indulgent way;
(iii) why should i feel bad if i'd worked hard to earn that money in the first
place, and considering that i might well spend something like that over
6 months or a year anyway?
(iv) If i do spend that in a year, is my need for Namlook/James/Black Dog/
etc greater than, say, X's need for a bed or food or other requirements
for a decent life, and if not, do I then deserve it?
(v) And then, if not, has X done anything to earn the money - or rather, what
it can buy?
(vi) If X has not done anything to earn them, is this because he (or she)
is unable to, either through some sort of mental or physical disability or
due to some discrimination or disadvantage working against them?
(vii) If so - and indeed, if not - how the hell do we decide who deserves
what from themselves or from anyone else in this world?
What this all boils down to, in effect, is working our obligations
to ourselves, our contemporaries, and our fellow citizens, and ensuring that
disadvantage can be compensated for or justified.
But this doesnt help me if i ever *have* #270 to spend on Fax stuff.
Too many questions, and not enough answers.......
