About the "high" and the "low", I'm not sure i can compare this properly,
but, in jazz we often see that the drum player is not always responsible
for keeping the time. Often times we can see a piano covering this
function. When i listen to jazz i can hear diff instruments on diff songs
anchoring the melody. A listen to Mingus will easily proove that the bass
can be soloed quite eloquently. But for the most part i hav to agree.
another work that would illustrate this purpose is "Bitches Brew".
