My thoughts, for what they're worth:
Everybody gets bad reviews. Beethoven, John Coltrane, the Beatles, me, you.
When you release something to the public, it's no longer "making music for
yourself." That doesn't mean you should make music you don't want to make
because you think people will like it--they'd rather hear it from someone
who means it--but it does mean that you should only release things you can
stand behind, and that you made for the music's sake and not for yours.
You should be making music just for fun. Jam with friends, join an amateur
choir, noodle with your gear without recording, whatever. If you only make
music for release, you'll find it very hard to know when you're just
indulging yourself.
Once you internalize this attitude, you'll find that uninformed criticism
rolls off your back, while informed criticism is welcome despite the pain.
