VA-Deutscher Funk CD Caipirinha Music CAI2008 German weirdness from the last several years "compiled and crossfaded" by Burnt Friedman aka Nonplace Urban Field. I'd have to say this is one of the nicest comps I've yet picked up! A weird one indeed, but very listenable. Tracks: 1. Workshop "Eskapade" - nice short opener, very weird one, reminds me of an old Western for some reason, wacky German counting "1,2,3,4,4,3,2,1!" 2. The Bionaut "Wild Horse Annie" (Pluramon Mix) - a metallic beat and spooky sounds start this off, with a funky synth loop and muted pianos soon coming into the blend. It gets all grindy for a bit. Gotta like it. After a short, intense break, some distorted vocals build to the conclusion. Great! 3. Beige "Yakumo Dippel" - minimal type of track with some unusual percussion, OK 4. Mono "Inflatable Rasta Wig" (deflated) - dubby start as the title suggests, then devolves into some slowish weirdness, nice but long 5. General Magic & Pita "Spring Fridge" - The liner notes tell that this was made with samples from a microphone left inside a closed fridge, and recorded live. Well I oughta try this myself. I listened to this one so many times already. Two words: valium and bass. Amazing. Crank up the bass and scare your neighbors. 6.Pluramon "Syth" - A very strange crossfade into this track after the long winddown of #5. Starts off slow with a slow heavy breakbeat and wanders gradually through some more spooky sounds, with just a touch of otherwordly, pitch bending lead towards the end. Fits very nice with track five, I like it. 7. Nonplace Urban Field "Roll Over Ehrenfeld" - a funky, distorted beat, builds, and builds, and builand bandana....... Great! I'm trying to get my hands on this guy's album. All in all I'd say this comp's worth it for tracks 5-7 alone, nothing against the rest of it. 8. Pole "Berlin" - Crackliness, very chilled 9. Beige "Bomb Schiller" wailing horns and stabbing synths, "Come on!" weird, wish it was longer 10. F.X. Randomiz "Dirtum" - warped, a swirling lead for a bit, some grating sounds, back with the swirling and more grating... "dit, dit dit, dit," a groaning break followed by a breakbeat and a happy ending, very nice, gotta listen to it more actually 11. kobat "Harq-al-ada" - ethnic bells, strings in the background, chill 12. Mao II "Der kleine rote Racher" Indian music gone awry, as the liner says "fully unsequenced", kinda 60's psychedelic sound to this one 13. Mouse on Mars "Chromantic" - nothing special, lounge music sound I'd give this one a 10/10 for sure. Did I say it was weird? None of the usual jungly kinda stuff. I'm on the lookout for more comps from Caipirinha, got another actually "Bento Box", it's OK but not up to the standard of this one in my book, I'll do a review. P.S. there's a "hidden track" by Beige, just let her play a while after track 13 finishes
