It's a prepared piano, i.e. a piano whose sounds have been modified by putting all sorts of objects (erasers, screws, bolts, rubber bands, utensils, etc.) on or between the strings. This Wikipedia article offers some relevant info: http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prepared_piano However, it strangely doesn't mention Cage's "Sonatas and Interludes" for prepared piano, probably the flagship piece for the instrument. There is a ton of recordings of that piece, most of which are pretty good. I am particularly fond of Yuji Takahashi's, although it might be hard to obtain nowadays... (on the pretty much deceased Denon label -- probably among the first digital recordings ever made). g. -- Guillaume Grenier - grenier.g@videotron.ca "Things are more like they are now than they ever were before."
