I just put this on while reading the review. Nothing personal but pretty much everything in this review feels hilariously wrong. "Seemingly operating on a whole other conceptual level where chaos and disorder reign, their music is very much in the experimental realm and appears to be a random selection of electronic sounds thrown together haphazardly with no apparent consideration for structure or design." When I listen to it the structure seems obvious. They may use random processes for elements of their music but it's never haphazard or arbitrary. I do think they make their pieces by jamming on Max patches live, but that means every switchup, every knob tweak is done by human hands live. Maybe something completely unlike one's expectations for music sounds random and arbitrary to you. There are two parts to listening to Autechre: Experiencing it without preconceptions as a sensual experience, and finding the musical thread of it. It can be a challenge to understand and appreciate, but it's as worthy as a pastime. And with repeated listening, it becomes familiar and makes a different sort of sense.
