It's funny, I hosted the Adult, tour here in Seattle and I enjoyed working with them very much. One of the things that I think people miss with Adult. is that they as much an art project as they are a band. I am curious why people always get uncomfortable when a band grows and changes their sound. I don't see anything wrong with expanding your sound and trying new things. Their live set included ALOT of older material and some newer stuff as well. I am not sure why this bothers people. Maybe a CD playing their older stuff with the band lip- syncing would be preferable? We definately don't want to see an electronic band actulally playing their instruments do we? damn that is blasphemy.... Numbers and Genders have an anoying urge as well to play well- crafted, challenging music with electronics AND live instruments...... oh and this show in Seattle was packed and they played 2 encores with the crowd yelling for more, so I think there are still some folks noticing....... Excerpts from a recent interview with Nicola: "We don't do what is popular; we do what isn't being done by anyone else. After years of doing the same thing on tour, things do change. When we first started making music, it was just for the sake of doing it. We didn't think anybody was going to listen and we didn't have any expectations for it, and a lot of the things we did in the studio were difficult for us to play live. We want to have fun when we're playing live and you can't do that with all the sequencers...the direction our music is moving in now is a lot like what I grew up with and what I was interested in as a teenager...A lot of the music on the new album is more confrontational. Some fans will say "This doesn't sound anything like Resuscitation! What the fuck?" [But] this is the music Adult. is making now and either you like it or you don't, and there's nothing we can do about it...I think when fans latch on to a certain sound, they want to control who you are. There are plenty of artists who change. We're still the same as far as our integrity. A lot of our ideas and musical elements are the same. But, I think some people can't get over what we did in the past. That's fine, some people are like that." You should go anyway; they put on a really good show. Maybe the newer material will win you over when you hear it played live.
