I just got back from the Jamie Lidell / Four Tet show
and have to say that was some of the most IDM shit
I've hear live in a while.
Jamie Lidell put on an entirely improvised show with
copious use of his vocal cords to construct various
beats, patterns, loops, effects, and general
controlled mayhem. His voice when singing was lush,
gorgeous and completely true to the record (Multiply).
He played various songs from the album but
deconstructed and rebuilt them each from start to
finish. He had an engaging stage presence, seemed to
really be enjoying himself and took time to speak to
the audience and wish everyone well. He had a couple
Mics, various effects, a Korg of some sort and that's
about it. He rarely stood still for longer than a
minute and was definitely makin' the music on the
spot. What an outstanding set. Highly Recommended!
Four Tet was an abrupt departure from the light and
cheery darkness that was Jamie Lidell but a few
minutes into the set and all that was washed away.
Four Tet was much more intense and very well engrossed
in his two laptops and mixer. He setup his gear close
to the edge of the stage and with his deepset eyes
gazed intensely at the screens the entire time. If I
recall, he looked up at the crowd 4 seperate times. He
smiled only one of those times and really came off as
someone who was very shy. His set was powerful,
cerebral, and chock full of noise and rumble. He put
together each song with elaborate forcefulness and
developed them through a series of shifts of mood and
tempo. Overall the set was dark but when any beat came
in it set you moving quickly. Much less emotionally
engaging than Lidell but very much as aurally
engaging.
Each played for an hour and Four Tet did a 10 minute
encore. The show was fantastic. Very IDM. What more
can be said? If they come to your town go! Also - buy
presale, the show sold out :)
