I guess a Phd might be exaggerated but one thing no one has mentioned
here so far is the performance factor of playing air guitar and what it
means for rock, etc. Several types of music can't be reduced to the
music, it's a whole package of styles, images and performance. Rappers
have to make certain moves in their videos, heavy metal guitarist have
to hold, move and play (and I'm not talking about how it sounds it's
just the movements) their instruments in a certain way to fit into the
genre's codes of cool. In electronics this might have been reduced to
autisticly starring on a laptop screen added by some
controller-tweeking, but this is the big weakness of most electronics
live acts making them so boring to watch.
More stupid moves please!
