Sorry I just kinda popped out of lurker mode without any sort of
introduction there. My name's Shawn, and I'm a technoholic. I live in
San Francisco, and I play infrequently to dirty ravers in warehouses and
half-empty bars.
Like many of you, I was first exposed to IDM in the form of Aphex Twin.
I was a Nine Inch Nails fanboy in my teens (I know, I'm dating myself
here), and I stumbled upon an RDJ "remix" on the Further Down the Spiral
EP in '95. Along with 99% of the people I know, I gradually discovered
Autechre, BOC, Plaid, Cylob, Two Lone Swordsmen, Squarepusher, LFO, Luke
Vibert, Photek, et al. After I moved to SF in '99, I kind of tuned out
IDM and focused on drum and bass, house, and eventually techno (which,
like "IDM", is a term I don't particularly like using).
Recently, my new-found love of deep, minimal stuff sparked a renewed
interest IDM. I'm getting back into Monolake and Arovane. I'm loving
the dubby stuff, like Basic Channel (more specifically, Rhythm & Sound),
Deadbeat, Thomas Fehlmann, and Michael Mayer's "Immer" mix. I'm a sucker
for click-house, a la Matthew Herbert, Akufen and Soft Pink Truth. I
like the new Mouse on Mars as much as the old, and I'm not afraid to
admit that I really liked the Milosh album on Plug Research (though I do
wish the songs were all a little more developed). Right now I'm digging
the "Station" compilation on Ai, and the new albums by Swod and AM/PM.
What I haven't really been able to get into is the harder stuff. Kid
606, Venetian Snares... it's all just a bit too aggro for me. Hard
techno's never really been my thing either, though I will admit to
owning a couple of Joel Mull, Heiko Laux and Renato Cohen records. :)
So yeah, that's me. Let me know if you have any recommendations based on
what I've listed above, I'm always on the lookout for something new to
listen to.
Cheers,
