iTunes on both Mac and PC supports Apple Lossless, which is basically
as good as FLAC/Monkey's Audio (Ape) files in file size and quality and
best of all the end user doesn't have to do anything other than install
iTunes. It's a lot easier than dicking with plug-ins and so on (imo).
Sure it's not open source, but hey, we're talking about the vast
majority of users who couldn't care less about open source and only
want simplicity.
