Yes, the distinction can be rather hard between the two. While Artifical Intelligence was the first "idm" compilation, I actually got turned onto IDM buy a totally different compilation set. The TEEX vol 1 (aka Trans Europe Express) is where I first learned I loved idm. The compilation actually has a good collection of ambient and idm and the distinction can be heard through the different artists. If you've never sat down and listened to this Various Artists set check it out and you'll be able to get some of the best early IDM...pre glitching...or at least before it became prevalent.
