So Friday nights (weekly? bi-weekly? monthly?) at the Getty here in LA they do a free music performance. The Getty, while not as large, is as prestigious a museum as the Louvre or the Smithsonian or anything around the world.
This past Friday was their first "all electronic" night.
I went to go see a friend of mine, George Sarah- electronic beats and basslines with a live string quartet- actually in this performance a string sextet and a variety of vocalists. Even though he is a friend of mine and it was a free show, his music bores me to tears. Very "adult comtemporary down-tempo/chill electronica" along the same lines as Delerium, but mellower. Years ago George spent his time doing abrasive industrial hardcore in Stereotaxic Device and THC. Those days are obviously long gone for George.
Also on the bill, and unbeknownst to me was Boom Bip, who was quite a delightful surprise. Performed on laptop and a small handul of toy noisemakers and little bell things, he was worth showing up for. I remember reading here on the list that he was heavy on the hip hop, and Friday he showed a little of that, but most of it was straight idm with some nice melodies and a bit of glitch.
Unfortunately, the sound system had zero low end, so sonically it was less than ideal. Still, many of use young whippersnappers hung out with all the 50 and 60 and 70 year olds for the entire performance. And yes, those senior citizens did seem to really enjoy the music. First laptop show for many of them I'm sure.
Then I was off to KlangKlang at the Smell for Dan Doormouse and the rest. Fucking outstanding. Doormouse was great fun. And I really really wanted to see Duran Duran Duran, but by that time it was 2:30 and working stiffs like me who get up at 6am every day find it really hard to stay awake that long. (Are you listening Kinga? Too many djs, too many acts, getting started too late = people like me walking out.)Didn't too much pay attention to the other atrists/djs. Matt Green I didn't like- hardish techno, and he seemed way to occupied with his low end cut knob- 10 seconds on, 10 seconds off, 10 seconds on, 10 seconds off for an hour.
