Well livejournal hasn't killed IDM, by any means. The way livejournal works seems to make things work a little differently than either mailing lists, or blogs. The idea of friends whose journals you read regularly, and mutual friends, is a little like friendster, but without the whole circle-jerk feel that friendster has. You write in a livejournal because you want to record stuff - like you would in a private journal, but also for a presumably sympathetic audience. It's less ephemeral than e-mail lists, yet still encourages some spontanaeity in discourse. It doesn't seem to precipitate flame wars like mailing lists. It's just that magical admixture of features and limitations that seems to be successful and self-reinforcing. On Mon, 3 Nov 2003, cutups wrote:
