i've been finding my electronic music through trips to halcyon (a lounge and store where you can listen to CDs before you buy), as well as reading reviews in magazines (like grooves and a new one called ei) and then doing searches on amazon or google to find short sound clips if i can. recently i found a lot of good stuff on www.epitonic.com, and i think there are some other online stores that have sound clips.

they use a blocking service called websense designed to keep out anything that might bog the network down, so no downloading mp3's or mpegs (even if you can get to the host server), and major sites like mtv.com, heavy.com, and of course, all the porn they can find.

it's possible. when i first heard joy division's 'unknown pleasures' it was on a bad cassette copy and i thought it was awful, but around the same time i heard 'closer' on CD and loved it. i thought they just got better from one album to the next. still, most of the time, i figure that sound quality is going to vary depending on if i play it on a boom box, discman, home stereo, or computer (as well as speakers vs. headphones), so if the "essence" is too much tied to sound quality it may not be the thing for me anyway. i mean, brian williams says everyone listening to lustmord CDs should have a subwoofer or they're not getting the full effect. i don't, and i love his work. then again, that always gets played on the home stereo.
