the idea of IDM-approved anything scares me, but i'll venture a few answers
anyway.
the garage most likely to appeal to IDM heads right now is "grime," which is
a really primitive-sounding, low-end-intensive strain of blipment brutalism,
generally with raps (though most of the 12s come with instrumentals).
dizzee rascal is the best example here - he just won the mercury prize. you
sleep on his debut album, "boy in da corner" at your own peril.
bbc.co.uk's 1xtra program has a good selection of mainstream and underground
garage on its mixshows.
blissout.blogspot.com and heronbone.blogspot.com are good places to find out
about grime producers.
finally, the tempa records (horsepower productions) camp is indeed a good
place to find the deeper, dubbier end of the spectrum; check out clips from
many of those producers at www.dubplate.net.
