pioneer cd decks are nice, but impractical for someone who plays out a lot. you can't always count on the venue having those fancy things, especially not for the kind o places one would usually play IDM. conversely, most every venue will have a pair of technics 1200s turntables. final scratch? a good idea, but djing can be ridiculous. picture this likely scenario : you step up into a tiny dj booth, trying to untangle a sticky tangled mess of wires, in the dark, half full pints of beer and ashtrays dangerously perched on all sides, the previous dj's track is about to run out and you're still fumbling about unplugging and re-plugging the mixer/ power to your laptop / final scratch box. panic! augh. much of the time i like to keep it simple and just use vinyl. no worries. bring needles, headphones, and your records. it'll work. simple. no worries about breaking your laptop or having it stolen. the less brainpower you spend on worries, the more space you have to think about the important things like track selection and mood. i can't wait for the day when i don't have to haul out a crateload of records to each dj gig, but it's not quite there yet. i think the future is going to be in little ipod-like devices that have pitch control.... in the end, a mix of everything is best. turntables are still a must. cds are good, mp3 players are good. it's not really about the format anyway, it's about the music. as adesh said, there are lots of great vinyl-only releases out there. mmmmm tasty. have fun and be flexible. .aaron opiatenyc@hotmail.com opiatenyc.com . aaronspectre.com opiatenyc.com/pie _________________________________________________________________ Get MSN 8 and enjoy automatic e-mail virus protection. http://join.msn.com/?page=features/virus --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
