Definitely. I"m a big supporter of venues that are actually suited for performances, instead of a large space with a booze and music license. The problem is that no one's really used to a non-performing performer yet. If they're not billed as DJ's, the venue is set up like a "rock" show, with overcrowding, nowhere to sit, and everyone looking right at the stage. If it's set up like a DJ thing, the artists are given minimal billing, and the fans are overwhelmed by meat-marketeers and extremely loud (and poor) PAs. So much of IDM would do great if, you know, there was a place to sit down. Dinner music? Dinner theater has all but disappeared for all but those with deep wallets, and I'd imagine such a venue for music would be similarly difficult to maintain for mass appeal. Still, I'd really love it if more coffee houses, diners, and other places where people already meet up introduce live music. As anyone who listens to IDM will tell you, it also works fantastically as background music and doesn't need to be blasting everyone across the street. I go to listen, but why listen when the environments suck?

Yeah, but these guys are sound artists, not video artists. They could spend a ton of money making sure they have extra laptops and buy programs that will do what they want, let alone find a way of getting video into the thing (outside of just downloading commercial stuff). I like having something to do at shows, and visuals are neat, but I can't expect it of a musician. Not to mention having a projector... Plus if you get too elaborate, you draw the ire of indie poseurs who just show up to sneer at everything :D derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ catchy signature coming soon --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
