Ten years before, neither of the artists would have dreamt of teaming up with the other. In those days of Smiley shirts and funny Disco pills when House and Techno were still in their infancy, Jan and André set out for their voyage. The predilections of older sisters and gay hairdressers - Depeche Mode, Human League, Kraftwerk, Wham, EBM and Acid House - left their imprints on a passion now deeply rooted in their souls. Both started their careers with the typical Roland Beat and Bass Box Groove classics, staging illegal Techno parties in humid basements where they squirted their musical acid and wallowed in the blissful bathtub of analogue bubbles. Cables, sync interfaces, knobs, controls and consoles plus the General Midi become their best friends. The old Joysticks and the 5" floppies of the home-computing era soon fall prey to oblivion in dusty corners of former children´s rooms which are now converted into musical headquarters. Tender electomagnetic fields and the diminutive lightshow of LED displays on pattern sequencers become part of their vital functions. They are born to programme - and they understand, there is no music without the machine. André Estermann is lucky. Thanks to the dutch label "Djax up Beats", his first project, "Analogical", finds a vinyl glide path to Disco heaven. André´s records are on the shelves of Jan´s friends and the country clubs resound with the clatter of his electronic delights, but still they haven´t met. Only when both of them are signed to the label "Musik aus Strom", run by Michael Fakesch and Chris de Luca of "Funkstörung"-fame, they have come full circle and are united under the cloak of modern Electronica. Influenced by english labels like Skam, Warp and Reflex, in Germany too a little family of young men full of creative impulse emerges, willing to break up the same old grooves of Electronica and move on towards IDM (Intelligent Dance Music). Jan Bruhnke´s "Locust Lunch EP" is put forth and André Estermann sweetens the air with "Musik aus Strom No. 6". André and Jan have found a home with "Musik aus Strom", where they move in high circles. With artists like Freeform, Boards of Canada and Crunch it´s a pleasure to rewrite a chapter of musical history. Apart from that, André starts a project named AEMIC (André Estermann - Michael Fakesch) on the same label, while Jan meets new friends in Ulm, where his records come out on Bernd Karner´s label "Heimelektro Ulm". The two electrominds meet for the first time in 1998, in an inferno of cloudburst, mud and deluge called the Sunflower-Festival. Like Atlantis, the central Ambient area goes down in the flood and the crème de la crème of the german-british IDM-scene goes SOS. Jega, Mike Paradinas, Autechere and Boards of Canada melt into The Swamp-Thing rushing to rescue its equipment, and Electric Sheep drags a less weatherproof André Estermann on slippery Converse Chucks out of divers mudholes. After that, they become electronic blood brothers forever. In 1999, at the "Musik aus Strom Nacht" during the Interference Festival at the Berlin Love Parade, the two electronic handymen are reunited ten meters from the last relics of the Berlin Wall. Here they beget baby Cloinc. The Munich-Essen-route between their hometowns is soon an everyday experience, and before long the first Cloinc EP comes out on the young Munich label "Sellwell". André´s and Jan´s musical styles blend to a motley lucky bag filled with complex kaput beats, bucking, prancing and dying like an animal creation; a tongue-in-cheek break beat rendezvous, weird structures iced with honey pop-tunes - a keepsake from the olden times of cosy computer games. Cloinc´s songs don´t always follow the rules of musical composition, but nevertheless André and Jan stick to structure; no nameless tracks are created but stories are told. Vocal scraps and samples loosen up their songs and make way for imagination. It´s evident that both artists still belong to the pre-laptop musicians´ guild and that they make a point of celebrating the joy of synth even in today´s plug-in jungle. On the other hand, they use latest technology to create their own plug-ins - to go where no man ever listened before. Cloinc´s first LP, "Lonely Bits" is due October 2001 (Sellwell Productions, Munich). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MFOC BOOKING SQUAD Ralf Köster [] Gerd Ribbeck 0049 40 31791256 Ditmar-Koel-Str. 26 20459 Hamburg Germany ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ famous for craze: * 8DOOGYMOTO * * CLUB LE BOMB * * CLOINC * D`ARCANGELO * * FUNKSTÖRUNG * JAMIE LIDELL * * KANDISQUER * LEAFCUTTER JOHN * * METAMATICS * MEDIENGRUPPE TELEKOMMANDER * * MIXMASTER MORRIS * NORKEN * NITRADA * * PILOTE * SUPERDEFEKT * ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ every sunday MFOC @ Pudel Klub ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.mfoc.de http://www.tfsm.de --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
