Found this in a thesis....
The roll of the record company is becoming more and more redundant
with the advent of the digital age. In The past, record companies
payed for studio time, distribution, promotion, marketing etc. and the
average muso trying to make it big couldn't afford to do so.
But now all you need to cut a world class album is a PC, a bit of
experience and some time. As far as markeing and promotion go... time
and time again the internet has proved to be a powerful tool for
getting exposure, minus the large budget.
The point is that record companies are proving to be more trouble than
they're worth. Why do you think piracy has become such a large issue?
The musicians aren't losing money because they make 90% of their
earnings from sponsorship and endorsment. Album sales go pretty much
into the record company's pocket exclusively.
The US music industry lost $40 Billion in 2001. A sign that things are
changing. The next few years could difintely see the rise of the indi
musicians.
Any comments?
