It's tought to have a CD with an MSRP of $6 when everybody
has to make a cut, between the store, and the distro,
yourself, and the artist. It's easier to do for a single
or EP, which you would assume has lower costs. Then again,
most of our ilk are bedroom musicians, so the production
cost on an EP or a single or an album is roughly similar.
The big cost is pressing and getting it to distro.
My goal with my label is to price more reasonably, but
I've found that isn't always as easy as I'd hoped. I think
the MSRP on the FK SDJ 12" was like $6 or $7, which is not
fantastic. :|
But everybody has to get a cut, between Forced Exposure,
the store that buys the record from them, and then myself
as the label has to make up the cost of the other 499
copies...
And no, we did not turn a profit.
